Evaluation of Science Advice During
the COVID-19 Pandemic in Sweden
Professor Nele Brusselaers, MD, PhD discusses the pandemic response in
Sweden. Early on, it appeared that the main strategy by the government
was to reach herd immunity. Official emails stated that children could
be used to obtain herd immunity and at the same time the official
message was that children could not become ill with COVID-19. Schools
similar to other indoor venues can spread the disease. Parents were not
always informed of outbreaks in schools. The main message was to wash
your hands. Masks were stated to cause panic and acne and described as
dangerous. Healthcare workers were not allowed to wear masks in some
facilities, one was even fired for doing so. COVID-19 cases were not
timely and accurately reported in the beginning of the pandemic. Sweden
had too little testing and more deaths, hospitalizations, and ICU
admissions than the Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and
Finland. Health Watch USA(sm) Webinar, Frontline Worker Safety in the
